Workwear: Dressing right for the workplace

by admin on April 21, 2010

Dressing for work can be a bit of a minefield so it is best to be a little bit conservative. We’ve all seen people dressing inappropriately in the work place – from overdressing in slinky evening dresses to under-dressing in tatty ripped jeans so this article contains tips for getting it right in the workplace.

There are few organisations that still observe a dress code, but most expect a certain standard of dressing. Some organisations expect a uniform to be worn and this makes it easier but for the majority of workers they have to use their own initiative to decide what they should wear to work

It does not have to cost much money to dress well for work, most high street stores offer work ranges or smart casual collections. It is probably more appropriate to stick with darker colours such as navy, grey or black, these can be lifted with a bright or patterned shirt. A few essential pieces will get most women through the working week:

  • A tailored suit, jacket, trousers and skirt;
  • White fitted shirts;
  • Plain or striped shirts;
  • Well cut trousers and jacket; and
  • Good well fitting shoes.

Accessories and jewellery should be quite reserved and kept to a minimum, perhaps just earrings, also makeup should be toned down. Not everyone spends all their time in work on their feet but shoes should be comfortable rather than killer heels, although a bright coloured pair of shoes would be acceptable and give the wearer a little sense of individuality. In companies where the dress code is relaxed it can be acceptable to wear jeans, casual trousers and tops, as long as the outfit is clean and does not cause offence it should be acceptable. Most organisations frown upon the wearing of sportswear in the workplace so this should be avoided.

Perhaps the best way to decide what to wear to work is to look at colleagues and try to fit in, little splashes of individuality are acceptable but should not be too overbearing.
